Comedian Sarah Silverman files copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI and Meta

Reading Time: 2 minutes

US comedian and author Sarah Silverman, along with authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, alleging copyright infringement. The lawsuit claims that OpenAI and Meta used their copyrighted works without permission to train their artificial intelligence (AI) models.

Allegations of Unauthorized Use of Copyrighted Material

The authors filing the lawsuit against OpenAI assert that OpenAI used their copyrighted books as training material for ChatGPT without their consent. Likewise, the authors bringing the lawsuit against Meta claim that Meta included numerous copyrighted books by them in the dataset used to train Meta’s LLaMA AI models.

The suits assert that the authors’ works originated from “shadow library” sites, which have long intrigued the AI training community, and that they utilized them without permission or proper authorization.

Claims of Uncanny Text Generation and Additional Lawsuits

The lawyers representing the authors have received feedback from other writers, authors, and publishers expressing concerns about ChatGPT’s ability to generate text that resembles copyrighted material, prompting further legal action.

Mona Awad and Paul Tremblay, two additional authors, have independently filed a class action lawsuit against OpenAI, asserting that OpenAI trained ChatGPT on their works without obtaining their consent. Additionally, Getty Images, a stock photo company, has initiated legal proceedings against Stable Diffusion, the company behind AI image generator, for alleged copyright infringement.

These lawsuits not only focus on the unauthorized use of copyrighted material but also address the issue of false answers or “hallucinations” that AI models can produce. In another case, a radio host is suing OpenAI for defamation after the AI falsely accused him of fraud.

OpenAI and Meta have been approached for comment regarding the lawsuits.
