Google has begun rolling out a new safety feature known as “unknown tracker alerts” for Android users. The feature was first announced at Google I/O, the company’s developer event, earlier this spring. With this update, Android users will automatically receive alerts if an unknown Bluetooth device is detected traveling with them. This can serve as a warning sign that someone might be stalking them using an Apple AirTag or another Bluetooth tracking device. Users will also have the option to manually scan for trackers with their Android device and receive guidance on what to do if a tracking device is found.
Addressing Issues with Bluetooth Tracking
The emergence of reports about people using AirTags for stalking and illegal activities, such as tracking cars for planned thefts, raised concerns about the safety and privacy of individuals. In response, Apple promised to address the problems by adding new privacy warnings and alerts to AirTags. However, these changes did not benefit Android users.
Joint Efforts by Apple and Google
In May, Apple and Google announced their plan to create an industry-wide specification. The focus is on alerting users to unwanted tracking from Bluetooth devices. They aim to complete the finalized specification by the end of the year. Google takes the lead in user safety by introducing proactive alerts. These alerts notify Android users about trackers traveling with them. It’s a custom implementation to protect users. On the other hand, Apple will delay implementing the joint specification until it is finalized.
How the Google Alerts Feature Works
The new alerts feature on Android will send notifications to users when an unknown tracker is detected nearby. Users will receive these notifications on their devices, indicating that the tracker is separated from its owner. By tapping on the notification, a map will be displayed, showing the tracker’s location as it travels with the user. Additionally, users have the option to play a sound on the tracker, which can aid in locating it.
Additional Features and Future Updates
Android users will have the option to manually scan their surroundings for nearby Bluetooth trackers by visiting the “Safety & Emergency” section in Android’s Settings and selecting “Unknown tracker alerts.” Google had also announced updates to its Find My Device network to help users locate missing belongings using third-party Bluetooth tracker tags. However, these updates are currently on hold until Apple implements protections for iOS, as both companies work towards finalizing the joint unwanted tracker alert specification.
