Bluesky, one of the prominent Twitter alternatives, is shaking up how users explore new content on its platform. Previously, the Bluesky app featured a “What’s Hot” feed, highly sought after by users as it brought attention to their posts and potentially gained them more followers. Now, the platform is replacing this feed with a personalized “Discover” feed driven by algorithms, showcasing more than just trending content.

The Power of Algorithmic Recommendation Systems

The introduction of the “Discover” feed is not a novel concept. Other social networks, including Twitter (now X), TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, have adopted similar algorithmic feeds. These feeds combine content relevant to users’ interests with posts from their broader social circles, creating a captivating and unique feed for each user.

Bluesky Joins Other Rivals in Embracing Personalization

Bluesky is not the first Twitter competitor to embrace personalization. Recently, the Mastodon app Mammoth proposed its own personalized “For You” feed to make the app feel familiar to users migrating from Twitter to other microblogging networks. Similarly, Meta’s Threads app also started with an algorithmic feed before introducing the sought-after reverse chronological timeline.

The Appeal of Algorithmic Feeds

The shift to algorithmic feeds is driven by research indicating higher user engagement. A study conducted in collaboration with Meta revealed that users spending time on platforms with reverse chronological feeds is considerably lower. Algorithmic feeds have proven to be more engaging, leading to their widespread adoption across various social platforms, despite users’ demands for more straightforward “Following” feeds.

Bluesky Approach to Algorithmic Choice

Bluesky sets itself apart by offering algorithmic choice as an option rather than a forced feature. Users can unpin feeds they dislike and discover and install new feeds that better suit their interests. This approach empowers users to customize their feeds based on their preferences, promoting a more tailored experience on the platform.

Despite its innovative approach and decentralized networking protocol, Bluesky faces challenges. The company has faced criticism for its handling of moderation issues, including allowing usernames with racial slurs. Operating in an invite-only mode further limits its user base, while competition from Meta’s Threads app, boasting 100 million users, puts Bluesky under pressure to entice Twitter migrants to its platform. Addressing trust and safety concerns and expanding access to the public will be crucial for Bluesky’s future success.
