Ratan Tata-backed Motopaws tests unique QR identification collars for 100 stray dogs to fight illegal relocation

The joint initiative with Pawfriends.in aims to prevent stray dog deaths due to illegal relocation by using cloud-based QR IDs

Mumbai, June 28, 2023: Motopaws, an animal welfare startup backed by Ratan N. Tata, recently announced the initial testing of QR tag extensions on reflective dog collars. The initiative aims to provide digital identification for street dogs, in a bid to fight illegal relocation of strays.

Motopaws kicked off its flagship collaring drives for stray dogs, equipping them with reflective collars to ensure visibility and safety. The new QR tag extensions, made by pawfriends.in, can be attached to these collars and provide a complete snapshot of the dog’s original locality, vaccination and sterilization status, medical history, and details of local caretakers. This QR concept was designed by Akshay Ridlan of pawfriends.in, who also created the digital cloud infrastructure to store the data of stray dogs. With the help of Motopaws’ reach, on-field volunteers, experience in stray safety over the years, and quality collars, this concept can quickly be scaled.

Speaking on the beta test, Motopaws founder Shantanu Naidu said “Illegal relocation of dogs at the whim of citizens has become rampant, leading to violence against street dogs and deaths due to pack attacks or general confusion. Scanning the pawfriend.in tags on Motopaws collars will let the local feeders identify where the dog is from and will be a deterrent to illegal relocation. The reflective collars continue to protect the dogs from road kills by glowing at a distance of 500m in the night. Innovative associations between animal welfare organizations like this are key to a safer future for stray animals in the city.

“These QR tags will act as an Aadhar card, giving a digital identity to all stray dogs,” said pawfriend.in founder Akshay Ridlan.

Motopaws first gained popularity among netizens back in 2015 with the launch of reflective collars to prevent accidents and road kill among stray dogs. Today the brand has evolved to reach strays across the city and with this latest addition, Motopaws and pawfriends.in will give street dogs an identity of their own, ensuring complete prevention of illegal relocation.
